"Sweet Innovation: How Delvis Muia is Turning Beekeeping Into a Buzzing Agribusiness Across East Africa"
Their Story
Founded to strengthen sustainable honey production, Beecare manufactures and supplies high-quality beekeeping equipment—from modern hives and protective gear to honey processing tools—tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers, particularly in arid and semi-arid (ASAL) regions.
“Our model focuses on value creation for the farmer,” Delvis explains. “We want beekeeping to be profitable, accessible, and empowering for rural communities.”
Beecare works with a growing network of 3,789 registered bee farmers, serving as both a technology provider and an off-taker. The company’s operations are built around inclusive market systems, purchasing honey and beeswax directly from farmers. This model ensures fair pricing, prompt payments, and consistent market access—critical factors for livelihoods in rural areas.
From their state-of-the-art processing facility, Beecare produces branded honey now available on the shelves of leading supermarkets across Naivas, Quickmart, and Carrefour outlets. Meanwhile, its premium-grade beeswax—meeting stringent international standards—is exported to markets in the European Union and the United States, positioning Beecare among the few youth-led agribusinesses competing at global standards.
Delvis is not content with trade alone. He recognizes that sustainable apiculture requires capacity, innovation, and continuous learning. Beecare invests heavily in training and extension services, running field-based programs to help farmers adopt modern hive technologies, improve colony management, and enhance harvest quality.
His diversified interest in cashew and peanut value chains also reflects a broader vision—building resilient rural economies that draw strength from integrated, sustainable agriculture.
“At Beecare, we care about people as much as we care about bees,” Delvis says. “Our mission is to make rural enterprise thrive through innovation, not dependency.”
With rapid growth and recognition, Beecare is now expanding its equipment manufacturing capacity to serve more farmers and scaling its regional partnerships across East Africa. Delvis also hopes to launch a youth training program focused on apiculture entrepreneurship and equipment innovation—turning beekeeping into a career path for thousands of young people seeking opportunity in agribusiness.
Through Beecare Apiaries International, Delvis Mwendwa Muia is redefining what youth-led enterprise can achieve—using the humble bee as a catalyst for economic empowerment, environmental conservation, and inclusive growth across the region.
