Washington Main
CEO, Centro Energy Limited
"Charting a Blue-Green Future: How Washington Maina Is Powering Growth Through Innovation in Aquaculture and Renewable Energy"
Their Story
His journey into aquaculture began with a modest goal: to supply his family with healthy white meat. But when his first fish harvest exceeded expectations, he sold the surplus locally and quickly discovered a gap in the market. What started as a family experiment grew into Centro Farms, a fully certified aquaculture venture built on innovation, resilience, and learning-by-doing.
Over the past decade, Centro Farms has evolved from humble ponds into a dynamic agribusiness recognized for quality, traceability, and youth employment. With support from the African Development Bank’s ENABLE Youth Kenya program, which provides youth-friendly financing, Washington established a certified fish hatchery—now one of the region’s main sources of traceable fingerlings.
“Entrepreneurship demands imagination and courage,” he reflects. “You have to try things that may not work and never let anyone else define your limits.”
That mindset has guided Centro’s success, enabling the company to operate across Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Somalia, earning referrals from major institutions, including Gatsby Africa. The hatchery now supplies sustainable aquaculture inputs that directly improve farmer productivity and food security across the region.
Beyond production, Washington places strong emphasis on capacity development. He leads a gender-balanced team of 17 young professionals managing operations across multiple sites and has personally trained over 100 additional youth through the Dual-TVET program, in collaboration with technical training institutions in Nyeri and Meru counties.
This model not only strengthens Kenya’s aquaculture workforce but also demonstrates how youth-led enterprises can be powerful training grounds for the next generation of agripreneurs.
Washington’s commitment to innovation extends beyond his own company. In 2024, he contributed to a team that secured second place at the AFS Global Forum Youth Hackathon, where participants developed the African Fish Market Access (AFMA) platform to improve cross-border trade. Today, Centro Energy manages AFMA’s accounting operations across Malawi and Ghana, supporting its mission to link fish farmers and markets through digital connectivity.
Looking ahead, Washington plans to leverage AI tools, digital finance, and market intelligence to strengthen traceability and quality standards across the aquaculture value chain. His vision is to position Centro Energy Limited as a leading regional actor advancing sustainable aquaculture and renewable energy integration in Africa.
Guided by resilience and driven by a belief that “growth should feel challenging,” Washington Maina continues to prove that determination, innovation, and purpose can turn even the smallest pond into a bridge toward continental transformation.
