"Building Climate-Resilient Farms from the Ground Up: How Mo Osman Abdulkadir Is Greening East Africa’s Food Systems"

Their Story

Across East Africa, where farmers face the twin challenges of climate change and soil degradation, one entrepreneur is leading efforts to turn adversity into opportunity. Mohamed Osman Abdulkadir, CEO of Greenlife Agribusiness Ltd, has spent more than a decade driving innovation at the intersection of sustainability, technology, and food security.
With over 10 years of experience in sustainable agriculture and climate resilience, Mohamed’s mission is simple yet transformative: to help farmers adopt practical, climate-smart solutions that work for their realities. Under his leadership, Greenlife has become a regional trailblazer in greenhouse technology, drip irrigation systems, and circular economy models that recycle organic waste into affordable growing media and fertilizers.
“Our goal is to make sustainability profitable and accessible,” Mohamed explains. “When smallholders thrive, food systems transform.”
Greenlife Agribusiness is redefining how innovation works on African farms. By combining local ingenuity with science-based practices, the company supports farmers in improving yields while building stronger resilience to unpredictable weather patterns. Central to this work is AFYAPEAT, a locally produced cocopeat derived from coconut waste. This eco-friendly growing medium enhances soil health, reduces reliance on imported peat, and turns agricultural waste into value.
The AFYAPEAT initiative is part of a regional integration project supported by the East African Community (EAC) and GIZ, addressing pressing soil degradation and food security challenges in Somalia and Kenya. Through such projects, Greenlife demonstrates how inclusive, community-rooted solutions can scale across fragile and climate-vulnerable contexts.
Mohamed’s forward-thinking approach has earned wide recognition within Africa’s innovation ecosystem. Greenlife has been honored in several prestigious forums, including the IGNITE Food Systems Challenge (2024), the EAC Regional Hackathon for Youth and Women (2024), and the Tadamon Food Security Accelerator (2025).
These accolades validate not only the impact of Greenlife’s work but also the scalability of its climate-smart agribusiness model—proof that technology-driven sustainability can uplift both farmers and ecosystems alike.
Beyond his work at Greenlife, Mohamed founded ROOBDOON, a digital platform providing accessible climate and rainfall information to rural communities across Somalia and the Horn of Africa. The platform equips farmers, herders, and local authorities with actionable insights to anticipate weather patterns and adapt to climate variability more effectively.
For Mohamed, technology is not the end goal—it’s a means to empower people. “Climate information should not sit in reports,” he says. “It should reach farmers on their phones, in their language, and in time to make a difference.”
As he continues to expand Greenlife Agribusiness and champion sustainable farming practices, Mohamed envisions a region where climate-smart innovation is the norm, not the exception. His work—spanning soil health, smart irrigation, waste recycling, and digital climate services—illustrates how localised innovation can drive continental transformation.
In every greenhouse, drip system, and bag of AFYAPEAT, Mohamed Osman Abdulkadir is helping farmers grow not just crops—but resilience, livelihoods, and hope for a greener East Africa.
