"From Transport to Transformation: How James Venance Is Reinventing Agribusiness Logistics in Tanzania"
Their Story
Africana Ventures is more than just a distribution company—it’s a bridge between smallholder farmers and urban markets. The enterprise works to strengthen market access, improve logistics, and make food supply chains more efficient through a mix of aggregation, storage, transport, and data-driven coordination. “We’re solving problems that affect everyone—farmers, retailers, and consumers—by making the journey from field to market seamless,” says James.
James’s story began in 2017, when he was still working in transport and logistics but tried his hand at small-scale farming on the side. It was meant to be a side hustle, but it quickly opened his eyes to the massive inefficiencies in the food system. He noticed the same problems repeating themselves: farmers couldn’t find stable buyers, retailers struggled with shortages, and tons of good produce went to waste.
“I used to see trucks going back empty while farmers had produce piled by the roadside,” he recalls. “I realized logistics wasn’t the problem—it was coordination.”
This realization sparked the birth of Africana Ventures (AVL) in 2022. James envisioned a company that didn’t just move produce but connected the entire value chain. His team developed a vertically integrated model that covers aggregation, bulk distribution, urban vendor supply, reverse logistics, and digital supply-chain monitoring.
In just three years, Africana Ventures has grown steadily, achieving a 31% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and partnering with 53+ smallholder farmers. The company now supplies over 40 urban retail outlets across Dodoma and Dar es Salaam, working closely with local truck owners and logistics networks.
The platform has drastically reduced post-harvest losses, improved food consistency in city markets, and introduced input distribution channels that help smallholders access fertilizers and seeds more reliably. Through this work, James isn’t just building a business—he’s creating a movement for smarter, more inclusive food systems.
Bootstrapping his startup with over $12,000 of his own savings, James has learned what resilience means in the life of a young entrepreneur. He leads a small but dedicated core team of five, managing strategy and partnerships while building structures to scale.
His leadership gained further recognition after attending the World Food Forum Summit in 2025, where he launched a partnership with ECOTA, a climate-focused NGO, to reach 2,000 youth and women across four Tanzanian districts. The concept was later presented to the Ministry of Agriculture, which commended Africana Ventures under its Building a Better Tomorrow initiative for youth-driven innovation.
But for James, this is only the beginning. Over the next five years, he aims to empower 100,000 farmers, expand AVL’s model across East Africa, and grow revenue beyond $10 million, proving that youth-led enterprises can scale sustainably while improving livelihoods.
He believes the future of agriculture will be shaped by creativity and collaboration. “Youth have the energy and ideas to rebuild Africa’s food systems,” he says. “Agribusiness is not just about farming—it’s about innovation, logistics, and impact.”
Through Africana Ventures, James John Venance represents a generation redefining what it means to be an agripreneur—connecting people, building smarter supply chains, and proving that with determination and purpose, young Africans can feed their nations and shape the future.
