"Engineering Innovation Beneath the Surface: How Elizabeth Gakinya is Bringing Smart Tech to African Fish Farms"

Their Story

For Elizabeth Wanjiru Gakinya, innovation begins where technology meets purpose. At just 23 years old, this electrical and electronic engineer is reimagining Africa’s aquaculture through Trident Analytics, her bold climate-tech startup that blends IoT automation and AI analytics to boost fish-farm productivity.
Elizabeth’s journey began with a simple question: Why do so many small fish farmers lose yields despite their hard work? While studying telecommunications engineering, she discovered that many farmers struggle with poor water-quality management, relying on manual monitoring that leads to fish mortality and unpredictable production.
“I wanted to see if technology could bridge that gap,” she recalls. “Aquaculture needed tools that were affordable, intelligent, and tailored for smallholders.”
That insight led to Trident Analytics—a platform that puts advanced monitoring and automation directly in farmers’ hands.
Through locally developed IoT water sensors, Trident Analytics continuously tracks key pond parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature, alerting farmers via mobile phone when action is needed. Meanwhile, an AI-powered dashboard analyzes the data, helping farmers make informed decisions on feeding schedules and harvest timing.
But Elizabeth’s innovation goes beyond monitoring. Trident’s digital marketplace connects aquaculture producers directly to trusted buyers and input suppliers, reducing dependency on middlemen and making market access more transparent and rewarding.
Elizabeth’s work is especially transformative for young and women farmers who often face high entry barriers in aquaculture. By automating core processes and simplifying decision-making, her technology lowers labor demands while boosting productivity.
Her model also champions climate-smart aquaculture—optimizing resource use, minimizing waste, and improving environmental outcomes. “Sustainability isn’t just about protecting the environment,” she notes. “It’s about ensuring farmers can thrive in the long run.”
With Trident Analytics gaining momentum in Kenya, Elizabeth is now setting her sights on regional expansion across East Africa. Her plans include partnering with aquaculture training hubs, integrating smart technology into farmer education, and introducing affordable financing models so that even small-scale producers can adopt IoT systems.
Her vision is clear: to democratize technology in aquaculture and prove that digital innovation can power Africa’s blue economy from the grassroots up.
“Every fish farmer deserves access to the same intelligence that commercial operations use,” Elizabeth says. “Technology should empower, not exclude.”
